Using the Printer

To use the printer, you must print from the graphics tablet computer in the classroom. This is to ensure usage gets billed correctly.

Cost is automatically calculated based on square area + ink consumption by the printer driver; The total is charged to the user's Protocoin Balance.

The larger the area, or the more saturated the picture, the higher the price.

Tips and Tricks

  • It is important to have what is loaded in the machine match what the machine thinks is loaded. If you print ‘photo’ settings on plain paper it will blur and likely smear because it will apply too much ink and won’t give enough time to dry.
  • Protospace has an assortment of papers. Historically we have cheap plain paper 24", then a handful of larger rolls in matte/glossy photo, and canvas.
  • The printer handles identifying the width automatically
  • Opening the paper supply cover will cause the printer to eject that paper.
  • It is much easier to change the top roll 1 than it is to change roll 2.
  • ‘Portrait’ is the long direction on the roll (to be confirmed).
  • The affinity print dialogue has a paper ‘defined by driver’ I think which is then handled by:
    • The printer ‘properties’ dialogue box is important - you want the source paper size and type correct as mentioned previously and…
    • It will default to ‘draft’ quality. Change this every time to standard or quality.
  • The printer charges money out of your protocoin balance based on square inches of paper + picolitres of ink used. It will not tell you how much it will cost in advance. The demo print of a sun with mostly black ink 42"x42" is about $12.

Networking

Network access is restricted to the graphics computer (172.17.18.46) via the printer's own firewall settings (Setup > Networking > IPsec/Firewall).

HTTPS (only HTTPS) "failsafe" option is enabled so we don't lock ourselves out.

Servicing

Loading Ink

The T1200 uses six HP 72 ink cartridges. We have found that brand name ink cartridges aren't worth the difference in cost of funds. Ink is changed by selecting the menu button from the front panel and selecting Ink > Replace Ink Cartridge. Follow the on screen steps. Ink Cartridges are located under the smoky color and gray bulbous panel on the left side of the printer. [NOTE: Please ensure that the cartridges are actually empty before swapping them out. The printer will sometimes say they have 'expired' due to an incorrectly set clock when they are still fine.]

Ink Head Information

The T1200 uses three HP 72 ink heads. Each head prints two colors. As of the time of writing (Dec. 2022) the T1200 has three remanufactured print heads that are of dubious quality. Highly recommended to replace the print heads with new name brand ones when replacement is required. New HP print heads are approximately $115/ea.

Buying Paper

The T1200 takes 2" core x 44" paper. Since paper is a Protospace-supplied consumable, you are welcome to replenish rolls and get reimbursed.
